Anxiety and Depression – Part IV

There are different types of depressive disorders besides Major Depressive Disorder. They differ in onset and timing with special requirements. Let’s find out what’s Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder, Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder and Persistent Depressive Disorder! 

Our Topic Today: Other Depressive Disorders

In this episode, you will find out:

  • Background and the diagnostic criteria of the following depressive disorders
    • Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder
    • Premenstrual Depressive Disorder
    • Persistent Depressive Disorder

Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder is…

  • included to prevent the overdiagnosis and overtreatment of bipolar disorder in children and adolescents
  • persistent and severe irritability with frequent temper outbursts in 2 or more usual settings
  • for children up to age 18

Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder

  • Affects 2-5% of women
  • Consequences could impact women severely in areas of interpersonal relationships, working experiences, and affective changes
  • Less severe cases with fewer symptoms will be considered as Premenstrual Syndrome or Dysmenorrhea (with painful physical sensations brought by menses existing only)

Persistent Depressive Disorder

  • a depressed mood state prolonging for at least 2 years for adults and 1 year for children
  • harder to treat compared to Major Depressive Disorder
  • research shown that it is related to personality disorders

The word “happy” would lose its meaning if it were not balanced by sadness.
