Healing Your Inner Darkness – Part II

How do you usually treat yourself when you suffer? Do you criticize yourself for what have happened, or do you show yourself compassion and love? Be your own most intimate friend! Being self-compassionate is the best way to redeem yourself from sufferings and overcoming your inner demons.

Our Topic Today: Self-Compassion

In this episode, you will find out:

  • The psychology of self-compassion
  • How self-compassion could benefit you and why strengthening self-compassion might do more good to you than boosting self-esteem (the process of how you get it is the key!)
  • How to switch from the suffering mode to a self-compassionate mindset

What’s Self-Compassion in psychology?

  • kindness towards yourself
  • sensitivity to the experience of your suffering, coupled with a desire to alleviate that suffering
    • Self-kindness
    • Common Humanity
    • Mindfulness

Self-Kindness

  • the ability to console yourself while you’re hurting or suffering
  • being supportive for yourself when you encounter failures or realize your own weaknesses

Common Humanity

  • acknowledge that failure, mistakes, and sufferings are part of being human
  • take a compassionate ‘observer’s role to perceive the whole experience
  • notice that our history and surroundings shape who we are today

Mindfulness

  • being aware of what you’re going through right now, including your sufferings
  • validate your suffering rather than suppressing it or denying it
  • not over-identifying or judging your own shortcomings and failures

Benefits of Self-Compassion…

  • Less anxiety, stress and depression
  • Improved quality of life
  • Increased health-related behaviors
  • More psychological flexibility to cope with negative emotions and adapt to situational demands

Listen to this episode to find out how self-compassion could benefit you in other ways and experience the effects of the Self-Compassion Break exercise! (and some quick ways to practice self-compassion)

Words of Wisdom by Rupi Kaur

How you love yourself is how you teach others to love you.

Take-away messages

  • Don’t mess up with yourself when you’re most needed.
  • Approach your darkness with love and compassion, even when you’re not self-compassionate enough for now. Loving ourselves is an evolutionary capacity we might have lost sight of, but we could definitely pick that up and love ourselves for who we are.
